At Alias Email, we have decided not to open-source
our codebase for several reasons. Here's why:
Services can add data grabbers on their servers,
regardless of the published code. And your data
will be sold against your will. Popular security incident in 2024
(XZ Utils backdoor)
is a good example: open-source software can
have the same issues as closed-source software.
Furthermore, hackers can easily find backdoors
in open-source software, rather than attempting
to find them in closed-source software.
Our code can not easily be copied and run elsewhere.
Our ecosystem is complex and requires a lot of configuration
to work properly. Releasing the code to the public would make
it harder to maintain and update the service. It would also
make it harder to add new features and fix bugs.
Focus on the best service.
We are a small team, and we need to focus on
improving the service, its quality, and its
features first. Open-source makes it harder
to focus on essential things.
